Emily is right...funner is not a word. Reading good books helps you learn things like that. Funner is not a word that you will find in a good novel! Miz Luvable, if you're bored, why not read the 6 chapters you have due tomorrow? See, reading helps with boredom too!
The book we are reading is a part of the unit that we have been doing on change. This book, like the others, will connect to this and maybe then you will appreciate its value. I hope so! The bottom line is the EOG is not the finish line for school. It is a marker that tells us how much more we have to go to finish strong. In the case of school, we have a couple of more weeks. You'll survive, and maybe even learn a little something! Love, Mrs. M.

Well...

Well...JJ there are ways thru reading that are helpful. But i do agree with your point tho. It's a good point by that. But I think that's more of an opinion that most people would agree on.
WHY

I'm glad the EOGs are going so well for all of you! Ms. Calhoun and Mr. Morris tell me you're doing an awesome job. Thank you for doing your best. I'm tired of not being in class with you! I miss hearing what you have to say, but we'll get back together soon I hope! In the meantime, do your best, and know I'm 100% behind you! Love, Mrs. Marlowe

Benchmarks are to help teachers plan where they need to reteach, move on from , or extend extra help to kids. They don't tell the state of NC whether or not you are ready for the next grade. Dr. Spencer has the final say on whether a student passes, but she takes into account lots of things, including what your teachers think. So while she does make that decision, she doesn't do it alone! We don't have a choice about testing. Our government demands it, our state demands it, and so all we can do as teachers and students is to do our very, very best!!!
Here's the thing about the EOGs. These tests let your teachers know how we are doing and if you are learning what you are supposed to be learning. If you go in, take your time, read carefully, UNRAAVEL and proofread, you will do just fine! You are all smart kids, and I have no doubt that you will blow this test out of the water....just do your part, and you'll do perfectly fine! I miss being in class with you! I hope you are having a good time and learning a lot with Mr. Morris! See you soon! Love, Mrs. Marlowe
EOGs
I cannot WAIT for the EOGs to be over!!!(even though they haven't even started yet:) And it's even worse for us algebra people because we have an EOC on top of the EOGs...it sucks. I really don't want to take it! And I didn't realize how many people in our class are truly honest about how they feel about our teachers:)

That's okay Geogetty! I understand. I hope nothing was wrong, and that you were just busy doing other things.
I've read the reflections you did today on trace and evaluate. I got a kick out of some of your responses! They made me smile! Here are some of my favorite "evaluate" responses!
I've read the reflections you did today on trace and evaluate. I got a kick out of some of your responses! They made me smile! Here are some of my favorite "evaluate" responses!
- " We didn't like it when she ditched us!"
- "Annoying. You said be honest." (Ouch that hurt!)
- "Only one who hasn't left us yet!"
- "Love her and have learned a TON!" (Awhhh....thank you!)
- "She is one of the bestest teachers I have ever had." (You're sweet too!)
- "I love the blog she's done for us." (You write great posts too!)
- "Mrs. Marlowe, good, too much poetry, try different types of material." (Thanks for the advice!)
- "Mrs. Marlowe is a terrible teacher! Just kidding!" (Sure you are TJC!)
- "She's a full package!" (I like that!)
- "Mrs. Marlowe who is the kindest person and high spirited person I know." (I like that!)
That are so many other comments! I love the way you evaluate! You should do awesome on the EOG! Thanks for all the love! :)
Speaking of EOGs...one week from today, and it's own. Ms. Calhoun is going to give you the test, and Mr. Morris is going to be the proctor. You can't read after you finish until 11:10, so know need to rush. You know what they say, "Slow and steady wins the race!"
Sorry i havent posted lately but i was kinda of not in the mood and i had this book that was super good. Anyways im gonna answer the question about the Hele Keller story. I thought the whole story was very fascinating, especially the way she described things. I really thought it was incredible how she is able to make those connections to things when she's not able to hear, talk or see. Her descriptions just really amazed me.

Hellen Keller
I think the most fasinating part of the story today is the part when Hellen was stuck in that tree. It makes you wonder if she got hurt or if anyone came to the rescue. It makes you want to read on in the story.
Helen Keller
I think the most fascinating part about the Helen Keller story was that she could describe how she felt being stuck in that tree even though she couldn't see or hear. I would personally be having a panic attack if I was stuck in a tree during a storm and couldn't call for help. I also think it was really brave of her to climb a tree again even after that other situation happened.

SS benchmark and EOG's
I think that the SS benchmark went well. There were a few questions that I did not understand, but overall I think I did pretty well.
The EOG's always make me nervous because the scores are one of the three parts that determine if I move on to the next grade or not. But I always look over worksheets and think to myself, You can do it, Sarah. Just be confident".

Today I think that the SS benchmak went well... there were a few questions on there that I really didn't know but it you eliminated the obvious, you could narrow it down to a 50-50 kinda thing. I personally think that DPS puts WAY to much pressure on the EOG's. It's like: "Hey guys! We are going to go take a big 3-day test to see if you make it in to the next grade! No pressure!" I really think that students would do better if there was less emphasis on the EOG. Like last year, I did great on all of my benchmarks but on the EOG's I didn't do as well. I think the EOG should be recognized but it shouldn't get the main role in the play... If you know what I mean.
i thought the social studies benchmark today was ok...i really think that i also did ok....i doubt in myself most of the time. EOGs are coming up and i am nervous about it but i don't worry about them too much because i know i'll do well...hopefully...cuz i do well most of the time. i think that we as students should do everything that the teachers ask us to do on benchmark day or before to do our best. That puts us in the best position, because what the teachers recommend are to help us and because they know what they're talking about.
How was the social studies benchmark today? How do you think you did?
In less than two weeks, we will be taking the EOGs. Sometimes people get nervous about them. Do you? I don't want you to worry about them, but I want you to do your best. How can students balance that~no worry, but great effort? What do you think?

Parts I didn't understand of the poem
Well, I couldn't understand some parts because the parts had words that I didn't understand. I guess because it was in a different language I couldn't understand it.

The Pied Piper poem
I thought the poem was ok. I thought it was sort of entertaing. I couldn't understand some of it. I think the moral of the story is never promise anything you can't keep.
Thank you Georgetty! I miss you too! I had to do a bunch of stuff for testing! Ugh! It's getting ready to start, but the good news is I know you are ready! Right!?
I hear you did a great job discussing the oil spill. What a sad event! It's so sad to think about all of the plant and animal life that will be lost isn't it?
What did you think about the Pied Piper poem? Was it entertaining? There is a moral to this folktale. What do you think that is? (Remember a moral is a lesson learned.)

i think that our class isn't rigoruous because we're always having a fun time and learning too, that part is important. i am pretty happy with my grade but i know that i can improve in it, i know its true therefore making me a better person. i know that i can improve my grade even if i'm happy with it. so thank you mrs. marlowe for helping me be a better person
I am pretty happy about my grade, but a little dissapointed because I got a B+. It upsets me because since third grade, i've never gotten less than an A in language arts, but that just means I need to work harder!!!!!!!!!! I don't think our class is rigorous, we have more of a chill attitude and we like to play around. I think that this is a good thing because we can goof off and have fun, but we still know when to be serious and do work!!!!!!!!11 :)
progress reports
I didn't know what rigor means and I looked it up online. It means to be strict and exact. I think the class is not rigoruous. To me, that's a good thing, because it means that we have fun and we learn at the same time.
How are you feeling about your progress reports?
I want you to think about the word rigor. Do you know what rigor is, and how it would apply to your grades and the work we do in class? If you don't know, look it up in the dictionary. Do you believe our class is rigorous? Is that a good thing or a bad thing!? Be sure and tell why you feel that way!
Remember what Harriet Beecher Stowe said, "The truth is the kindest thing we can give." When you think about your progress report, remember that. You might not like what the progress report says, but it is the truth, right? In the long run, it will help you become an even better student than you already are!
Remember to come to the MC for class tomorrow! We're doing the SRI for the last time this year!

Which I liked better
I liked the poem better because it was the 1st time I've ever heard it before. It was pretty cool how the poet used a metaphor for Lincoln assasination.
Literature groups
Although I was the disussion director, some people just didn't listen and just did their own thing. Some people helped, but we need to work on staying focused more.
Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Our group was very communative with answering the discussion director's questions, i really liked how everyone shared their own opinion, it gave us a chance to see each others point of view and to share what we had in mind. If someone wasn't prepared for the discussion in our groups we just skipped over them and went on to the next person. We gave the people some credit if they did the assignment and didn't participate because after all they did some of the work. Overall i think our group was very productive and really did really well in focusing.
Our Lit group
In our literature group, when someone didn't do their assignment,we just skip over that person and go on. The Checker(which was Femi today)then puts and "x" by their name to say they didn't complete it. If someone in our group did the assignment but not the reading, The Checker put "no" under the did this person read section.
I absolutly LOVE Dr. Seuss! He was so creative and so different. I guess that's why people like his books. I still don't know if it is poetry or stories...Maybe it could be both. But if Dr. Seuss was alive then I would ask him. But I read almost all of his books. My favorite is GREEN EGGS AND HAM!!!!!!!!!! Hahahaha! I use to read his books when I was younger but I miss him because he can't make anymore books. And nobody can ever replace him and if they did, they couldn't do the work the way he could.

Thanks Dillon and Sarah for commenting on Dr. Seuss. Some people really think his stuff is weird, but other people think it sparks imagination in kids, and that having all of those rhyming words helps kids when learning to read. Interesting....
I have looked over your literature circle materials, and it looks like most people did their assignments, and that most people behaved. If you had someone in your group who wasn't prepared, or if you weren't prepared, how did your group handle that? What about the people in your group who didn't complete the reading, but did the assignment anyway. How does that work?
Lauryn, Caroline, Jayla and Nicole, what can you do next time as Discussion Director to help ensure everyone does their job?
Ryan, Maiya, TJ and Femi, how hard was your job today, and were you able to be honest about the group members and their participation?

Dr. Suess
I haven't read many of Dr. Suess's books, but overall I like him. I think his books are a little bit of both stories and poems. They rhyme, like a poem, yet tell a story. I think what makes him loveable by his stories are that he just goes out there. It's like he is from another dimension.

i think that we always have to think (even if we decide not to) to prevent ourselves from making careless mistakes. From also deciding the best that we can, to make the best of our lives. Also to overthink things twice and to think of their consequences. May i also say that the boys didn't see the pyramid's value because they're too afraid to discover their more sensitive feelings. Or they decided not to respond because they're afraid of what people might think with what they may say. but i wanna say this, its better to show the real you than to seem tough because then you're not showing the real you.
This Is Like a Riddle:
What is always coming but never arrives?
Thursday, April 22, 2010
I think it's kind of interesting that of the people that wrote about this, almost all of the girls saw the pyramid's value, but the one boy didn't. I wonder why that is? I know when I was in the 7th grade, I didn't really think about anything but what my friends were doing. Sometimes I think we miss (I know I did) opportunities because we focus on the wrong things at the wrong time, like friends instead of studying, or finishing a task quickly so you write fast and make lots of mistakes. I personally loved that chart when my professor shared it with us last night. I immediately thought of all of you because I see the value that it could have as you are making decisions about the choices you will make and behaviors that you will show. Jason brings up a good point though, why do we always have to think? Hmmmm.....
i agree with femi that the pyramid does help you in making decisions.it also helps you seperate things you want to do with things you don't want to do. i think it's important because it it helps us in not overthinking decisions that could be easily made. It also helps us realize that we need to do, (even if we don't want to) what is expected of us because it not only pleases others but it helps us.
The chart
I think the chart was kinda confusing. I didn't really get the whole concept of it. But that's just me.
I really liked the pyramid we saw today in class. It REALLY made me think about things that I don't normally think about. It makes a lot of sense, its pretty much like putting yourself in a teachers mind. To grade the paper, they probably consider all three things in the pyramid. ITS PRETTY KOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! : D
It makes me think about all the choices I make. Also that every choice I make has to do with that chart.
I like the chart, it makes sense to me in my opinion.
I think it is very important because it makes me think about is required (paper, pencil, etc.) What is expected (homework, working on warm-up, etc.) Also what is delighted (name on paper, and the date, etc.)
Mental Planning Pyramid for Behavior
Today in class, I showed you the Mental Planning Pyramid for Behavior. Remember the words: Required; Expected and Delights!? What did you think about it? Does it make sense to you? Do you think it's important?

7th grade
I think the hardest thing that has happened for me during 7th grade is trying to get my homework all done. Sometimes it was easy and short, sometimes it was hard and long. It was also kinda hard for me lately because of Aladdin rehearsals. The 8th grade will probably be way different because it's a step up and it basically gets you ready for the challenges of high school.

Best thing versus worst thing!!
The best thing that happened to me today is that I found out my nephew, Carson, who is a freshman at Clemson, is transferring to Carolina. While I'm not a Carolina fan, I'm happy for him!
The worst thing that happened is that I didn't finish all of my work before I left school! UGH!
The worst thing that happened is that I didn't finish all of my work before I left school! UGH!
The best thing that happened today was that I finished all my homework at school (even Algebra!) and so I got to do whatever I wanted when I got home. Usually, I have ALOT of homework to do because of algebra! Luckily, it was easy!
The worst thing that happened today was that my brother is sick. He had to stay home which is pretty bad...but nothing really bad happened to me personally.
The worst thing that happened today was that my brother is sick. He had to stay home which is pretty bad...but nothing really bad happened to me personally.
Good & Bad

A good thing is that we cooked pizza sticks in life skill today, which was really good, and we also tried indian food in social studies class, also that when people say that duke rocks it's only an opinion. A bad thing that happened to me today was that i found out that my dad is leaving friday night to Washington and he's taking my laptop with him!
The best thing that happend today was, I found out that the DSA game that was supposed to be on Thursday was postponed until next Thursday which is good because I'm not going to miss it anymore! :D
The worst thing that happened today was I got the work that I'm going to miss in math and it doesn't look very easy.... :(
The worst thing that happened today was I got the work that I'm going to miss in math and it doesn't look very easy.... :(
The best and the worst
The best thing that happened to me today was that I got a 95 on a set design test in theater arts. A bad thing that happened to me today was that during Aladdin rehearsal, we had to do the curtian call three times to get it right.

Inspired by...

The teacher that has inspired me the most is Mrs.McClain my 4th grade teacher, some of the kids in our class had her too.She was also my 5th grade teacher, she inspired me because she always was so sure of herself of how she taught us, most of the class got it at the first time she taught us a new lesson. Mrs. McClain knew how to control her class also, she awarded us whenever we did something good. One of the things i liked most was that she had wonderful activities, and wonderful awards like the people read the required books went to a pool party. At the end of the 4th grade year we had a tea party just for our AIG class and with our parents. She inspired me the most
An inspiring teacher
A teacher that has inspired me the most whould have to be my kindergarden teacher, Mr. Shinn. He was like a 2nd father to me. He knew about my marfan syndrome and instead of letting me go outside with everyone else, he would let me stay inside(with a buddy of course). I had alot of fun and got to play in the play stations a little longer. He made me feel like everyone else, even though I had a genetic disorder. That's why he was inspiring to me.
TEACHER
a teacher that has inspired me is my 1st and 2nd grade teacher, mrs. davis. she was so sweet and kind and i think that she is probably the most perfect teacher(other than mrs.marlowe of course =]).she was hardly ever mean and really knew what she was doing.i really miss her and hope to see her again someday. she inspired me because she was really sweet and always told me to do my best and work as hard as i can and to never give up. she is a teacher that i will never forget.

The quote
I have to agree with Georgetty. If that person was really your friend they would understand. Sometimes when we say things we don't really think it through. We also often think of ourselves more than others.
Friday, April 16, 2010

What you said Mrs. Marlowe makes sense to me, it what i was trying to say yesterday, i think i didn't do that well explaining it though. i think that we all make fun of people though we know that it's bad and hurts people's feelings, now that i think about it it makes me feel really bad. Also i agree with mrs. marlowe that we should tell people that it wrong to make fun of other people because that is another way of telling to stop. I also want to say that i'll try my best to not make fun of anyone anymore, we wouldn't like if someone did that to us, would we?
Thursday, April 15, 2010
In a lot of ways I agree with you Caroline. If what you're going to say is going to hurt someone, should you say it? Right or wrong, I'm not one to hurt someones feelings on purpose...like you said, it would be hurtful to tell someone what they were wearing was not cute. BUT what if the truth you are telling is helpful to that person or someone else? Suppose your friend came and told you something that they did really mean to someone else and wanted you to agree that what they did was funny, or okay, not bad? Should you tell the truth then even though your friend might get made at you? What about when your friend tells you a joke that makes fun of other people, or countries or beliefs. If those types of jokes bother you, should you tell the truth to your friend? I think that's more what this quote is about...telling people the truth when they are acting or saying things that are unkind to other people, cultures or beliefs. One of the greatest kindnesses we can show another person/group is to defend them when no one else will...that's what I think that quote means. Does that make sense?
It's hard for me to explain what the quote means... but I don't really agree with it. Sometimes, the truth isn't the kindness thing you can give. Sometimes it could be better to lie. Like a white lie, a lie that wont harm or hurt anyone. Something, for example: Someone asks you if you like what they are wearing. You thing it looks awful, but your not going to say "I think that that is the ugliest thing in the world!" You would lie and say that you liked it (probably). That way, no feelings are hurt.
Heteronyms:
I CANT THINK OF ANY!!!
Heteronyms:

I liked the picture of the Afganistan man and the soldier because it showed me that the soldier has compassion and is caring towards the residents there. It also showed me the friendship I think they developed. It gives us here hope. I really thought that was a great picture.
The picture of the injured woman was great because it gave me hope. Even though many died, many were saved, and that really changes the peoples' lives who have been rescued. Their life from the day on out will be different and they will be a new person pretty much. That shows change......for the better. It also makes you become thankful that you are still alive if you lost a loved on because you should always cherish the time with friends, family, etc. It may be the last time you see them ever. Those were great pictures!!

Pictures and Heteronyms
I liked the the picture of the soldier and the afghanistan man shaking hands because it might lead to be peace between our countries. I also liked the picture with the hurt woman because it showed people helping her and it showed people cared. I didn't like it because she was hurt. I'm happy because I went 2 for 2 in the baseball game today and got a double!! I hope I do good on the stems quiz, I'm a little nervous. I understand the heteronyms but it's hard to think of them.
You are all smarter than smart! Great heteronyms and thoughts about the pictures...I agree with everything you've said about them. They both have made a lasting impression on me. I think you are also right on about the quote! Good job!
Georgetty, you are right in your thinking about what heteronyms are, however, close (you are close by) is pronounced close (you hear the s sound)....close (like close the door) is pronounced cloze (you hear a z sound)...do you hear the difference now?

Pics and heteronyms
I liked the solider and Afganistan man pic the best because it made me happy and made me feel hopeful.
I found some more words that are heteronyms:
~Sewer(a drain) and sewer(as in a person that sews)
~Lead(to guide) and lead( the metal)
~Does( multiple female deer) and does( to perform)

I think the quote means that if you can't be nice or do good things, you can at least tell the truth because that's a kind and easy thing to do without like doing something extraordinary! (thanks to stems I know that means beyond ordinary) ;D
My favorite picture was the one of the hurt person because it gives us a connection. We may not get along with other countries and places and think they are horrible but from that picture we see that they go through hard things and tragedies too and we aren't that different after all.... think about it!
I FIGURED OUT MORE HETERONYMS TOO!
1)drawer (like a desk drawer, or a person who likes to draw)
2)address (like a street address, or you can address someone)
3)contract (you can sign a contract, or the muscles in your arm can contract)

I liked the picture of the soldier and the afghanistan man too. I was very touching, it made you feel this feeling, like a person you knew very well had to leave. I think this quote means that the truth is the best thing we can give to people because if we lie they may stay the same which is bad for them. So the best thing we can do for a person is to tell them the truth even if it hurts them because that will cause them to become a better person. Therefore we are being kind by helping them become a better person. I also thought the heteronyms were supposed to be spelled the same but pronounced differently, close isn't pronounced differently. I thought of some heteronyms too
~produce( like produce a carrot & the other produce)
~desert( like the desert & desert like desert him in the house)

"The truth is the kindest thing we can give." ~Harriet Beecher Stowe
Do you know who Harriet Beecher Stowe was and why she is an important part of American history? She was an author of a famous book called, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" that she wrote in 1852. Maybe one day you will have an opportunity to read this very famous book. She also wrote poetry, and is sometimes quoted. One quote that I have read is the one I have written above. What does this quote mean to you?
I enjoyed discussing those pictures from the newspaper with you. They were moving weren't they? Sometimes we forget that there are other people like us all over the world who want and need attention, love, friendship, compassion and every other positive thing we can give them. Which of the pictures did you like the best and why?
I thought of some more heteronyms! Did you? Here are some I thought of: close (the door), close (to you); bow (your head or the front of a ship) or bow (something you shoot arrows with or a ribbon you wear or put on a present); wound (an injury) or wound (like a string around a yo yo)!
I enjoyed discussing those pictures from the newspaper with you. They were moving weren't they? Below are propaganda techniques:
Bandwagon -- the suggestion that "everybody else is doing it."
Plain folks -- the idea that "users of this product are just like you."
Card stacking -- distorting or omitting facts.
Name-calling -- stereotyping people or ideas.
Glittering generalities -- using "good" labels, such as patriotic, beautiful, exciting, that are unsupported by facts.
Testimonial -- an endorsement by a famous person.
Snob appeal -- the implication that only the richest, smartest, or most important people are doing it.
Transference -- the association of a respected person with a product or idea.
Look in a newspaper, magazine or notice as you're watching TV ads that might have propaganda in them. Think about food commercials...everyone is happy and having a good time and the food is delicious! Is this always true? Are the restaurants always clean!?

discussions

i liked that eight year old kid, it was kinda of sad though. i think propaganda changes people's way of thinking and how they may feel about someone of something. propaganda in that way is a negative thing to me. One reason why is because it keeps people from making their own opinions in their point of view.
Change
The change that interested me the most was when we talked about DUKE winning the tournament! But other than that, the 8-year old Russian kid discussion was pretty interesting. I don't really watch the news, so I'm not exactly "up to date" on the international issues.
And personally, I think that propaganda has a negative influence. If a country is seeing propaganda that is somewhat demeaning to another country, it could spark debates or wars--which would NOT be a good thing! Why can't we just listen to each other's viewpoints on problems and not start a fight about it? It would make the world a WAAYY better place to live in!

Changes
Today in class we talked about all of the changes that have taken place lately in our world. Of the ones we discussed, which one interested you the most? Also, we talked about propaganda. What changes can propaganda cause to happen between people, cultures, countries and any other group you can think of? Is that a negative or positive thing? Explain.
Lockouts and extended metaphors
I didn't get locked out. I thought that the poem was ok. I didn't understand how that was a extended metaphor, though.
Mr.Morris
Mr. Morris was cool. He kept on saying " Right on", which I thought was cool. I'm sorry you weren't here Mrs. Marlowe. You would've liked him.

Benchmarks
Sorry I'm signing in late too, but anywayz i think i did pretty well on my benchmarks. I did take my time on it, so that's one of the reasons and because i do well on them usually. Mr. Morris was a good substitute it went well. Luckily no one got locked out, one time i did though, not my fault and it ended up being canceled. I think i'm having trouble understanding extended metaphors but i think i'll get it pretty soon.
Today!
How did everything go today with Mr. Morris? Did anyone get locked out? What did you think about the extended metaphor poem that you read called "My Life is Like a River?" Do you understand how that's an extended metaphor?
I'll be back tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing you! Love, Mrs. M.

Benchmarks
I think I did pretty well on my benchmarks. I feel like I took my time and I used the methods that Mrs. Hartwell gave us.

Now TJ! We can't live in the past. This was just not your year. Maybe next year....look to the future. Roy is thinking in this picture... "What will next year be like...aye yi yi yi yi..." Well, anyway, I'll let this picture stay up just to remind us of why it's always important to work hard, because there's always someone right behind you who can do it a little better...ie this year's National Champs. :)
Georgetty, I was late signing on tonight as I have been looking and working with test scores for the other grades! I have lots of questions, that's never a problem.
How do you think you did on the benchmark? Did you take your time and do your best?

DPS

i think these budget cuts are ridiculous. Dps has done nothing wrong and should only be rewarded with raised budgets. not lowered. At voyager, it is costing dps $400,000 just to add a 9th grade. All of those kids who are going there are districted to regular public schools but for some reason aren't going. Dps should not be spending money on people who are scared to go to regular high schools. they should just have to deal with it rather than costing dps almost another half a million dollars off of their budget.
Those of you that posted about the budget cuts make some very good points. According to research and statistics your generation is going to have a lower life expectancy because of obesity. So we know that PE and Healthy Living is critical. Some people are gifted in the areas of music and art, so to take those away would be awful. You live in a world that is all about 21st century technology, so you have to know about computers and how to use them. In fact, this blog is a 21st century skill that will be useful to you. It's important to know how to read, write and work mathematical equations, science helps you understand the way things work, and how things in the world are intertwined. History is a window to our past. What is there to cut? What class would you not miss? What about our custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, nurse, guidance counselors, principals, secretaries....could we do without them? The decisions that these county commissioners make this year will have an impact on you. They will bring about a change that may be positive but most likely will be negative. What can we do to make a difference in their decision? Here is a picture of the commissioners. None of them have children in DPS. If they have children, they are all adults now. Do you think this makes a difference?
DPS
I think that some non negotiable things are theater arts, fewer sports and chorus because I love theater arts and chorus, and I play girls' tennis. That would really stink if they had to cut all of that. I mean why can't the economy get better and then we don't have to have all of these cuts. It's very sad.
DPS Cuts...
I think that the cuts are totally unfair! Why don't we get a say about what happens. The classes that probablly would be cut are electives. We like electives because we get to choose them ourselves (execpt for gym) and look forward to them everyday, for some people it helps them get through the day. For others it's sports. Sports are the reason some of us don't fail classes, are lots of fun, and are something to look forward to everyday. I think that fewer teachers is a really dumb idea. Our classes are already too big. With bigger classes it is harder for the teacher to cover what YOU need to be covered because the have to deal with the other people in the class. So I don't think that a $3,000,000 budget cut would be a very smart idea.
Durham schools

i think that some things that are non-negotiable are gym, and strings and band because gym is like an elective that helps you to be healthy and teaches how to be healthy. Strings and band because the kids in that elective have wasted money in their instruments to recieve classes at school. I think it wouldn't be fair for them to to stop getting that education. Maybe life skill and computer classes could be cut and recieve them in high school but i'd like them not to be because it's fun and you do actually learn things at an early age. also because maybe there are higher courses in high school.
Today's reflection....
I see that some of you have beaten me to the blog! Good for you! Hopefully, you'll take another look and can add your opinion....according to today's newspaper, the Durham County Commissioners would like Durham Public Schools to cut $3,000,000 from our budget. For us here at Carrington, that might mean no agendas, no new textbooks, no more Renzulli Learning, fewer teachers so larger class sizes, some classes being cut all together (not Language Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies), no new computers, fewer new books in the media center, or maybe even fewer athletic teams. A non-negotiable is something that can't even be considered or even talked about, for instance for me, when it comes to you as my students, a non-negotiable is bullying. I'm not going to ever let you bully or be bullied by someone while you're with me. When you look at this list of possible cuts, what things do you think are non-negotiable and why? How do these things help or hinder your education?
