i think that our class isn't rigoruous because we're always having a fun time and learning too, that part is important. i am pretty happy with my grade but i know that i can improve in it, i know its true therefore making me a better person. i know that i can improve my grade even if i'm happy with it. so thank you mrs. marlowe for helping me be a better person

I am pretty happy about my grade, but a little dissapointed because I got a B+. It upsets me because since third grade, i've never gotten less than an A in language arts, but that just means I need to work harder!!!!!!!!!! I don't think our class is rigorous, we have more of a chill attitude and we like to play around. I think that this is a good thing because we can goof off and have fun, but we still know when to be serious and do work!!!!!!!!11 :)

progress reports

I didn't know what rigor means and I looked it up online. It means to be strict and exact. I think the class is not rigoruous. To me, that's a good thing, because it means that we have fun and we learn at the same time.

I liked the movie segment because ive heard the poem before and i dint understand the moive segment

i liked the poem better because it was a poem i had never heard of, and because i understood it better than the segment we watched.Also because i understood how the metaphors were used, it made a whole lot more sense when we went in and discussed what somethng may mean.

I actually liked discussing the poem a tad bit more than the video clip. It was cool to see all of the literary devices that were used! I liked the poem because you actually had to "dig deeper" to find out what the poem was about, instead of just reading and assuming :D

Literature groups

Although I was the disussion director, some people just didn't listen and just did their own thing. Some people helped, but we need to work on staying focused more.

What did you like better~watching the segment from "Dead Poet's Society" or discussing the poem "Oh Captain, My Captain?" Why?

Our group was very communative with answering the discussion director's questions, i really liked how everyone shared their own opinion, it gave us a chance to see each others point of view and to share what we had in mind. If someone wasn't prepared for the discussion in our groups we just skipped over them and went on to the next person. We gave the people some credit if they did the assignment and didn't participate because after all they did some of the work. Overall i think our group was very productive and really did really well in focusing.

Our Lit group

In our literature group, when someone didn't do their assignment,we just skip over that person and go on. The Checker(which was Femi today)then puts and "x" by their name to say they didn't complete it. If someone in our group did the assignment but not the reading, The Checker put "no" under the did this person read section.

My new group is Jake, Femi, Georgetty, Taylor, Mia, and of course me! We all do our jobs and work hard. We also have great discussions thanks to Femi (our discussion director)! I HAVE AN AWESOME GROUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I absolutly LOVE Dr. Seuss! He was so creative and so different. I guess that's why people like his books. I still don't know if it is poetry or stories...Maybe it could be both. But if Dr. Seuss was alive then I would ask him. But I read almost all of his books. My favorite is GREEN EGGS AND HAM!!!!!!!!!! Hahahaha! I use to read his books when I was younger but I miss him because he can't make anymore books. And nobody can ever replace him and if they did, they couldn't do the work the way he could.

Thanks Dillon and Sarah for commenting on Dr. Seuss. Some people really think his stuff is weird, but other people think it sparks imagination in kids, and that having all of those rhyming words helps kids when learning to read. Interesting....

I have looked over your literature circle materials, and it looks like most people did their assignments, and that most people behaved. If you had someone in your group who wasn't prepared, or if you weren't prepared, how did your group handle that? What about the people in your group who didn't complete the reading, but did the assignment anyway. How does that work?

Dr. Suess

I haven't read many of Dr. Suess's books, but overall I like him. I think his books are a little bit of both stories and poems. They rhyme, like a poem, yet tell a story. I think what makes him loveable by his stories are that he just goes out there. It's like he is from another dimension.

i really like doctor Seuss. he made stories that wanted you to keep on reading. all of his stories were really funny and they stick and your head. i think his books were stories and poems. i think those are called narrative poem

i think that we always have to think (even if we decide not to) to prevent ourselves from making careless mistakes. From also deciding the best that we can, to make the best of our lives. Also to overthink things twice and to think of their consequences. May i also say that the boys didn't see the pyramid's value because they're too afraid to discover their more sensitive feelings. Or they decided not to respond because they're afraid of what people might think with what they may say. but i wanna say this, its better to show the real you than to seem tough because then you're not showing the real you.

I think it's kind of interesting that of the people that wrote about this, almost all of the girls saw the pyramid's value, but the one boy didn't. I wonder why that is? I know when I was in the 7th grade, I didn't really think about anything but what my friends were doing. Sometimes I think we miss (I know I did) opportunities because we focus on the wrong things at the wrong time, like friends instead of studying, or finishing a task quickly so you write fast and make lots of mistakes. I personally loved that chart when my professor shared it with us last night. I immediately thought of all of you because I see the value that it could have as you are making decisions about the choices you will make and behaviors that you will show. Jason brings up a good point though, why do we always have to think? Hmmmm.....

i agree with femi that the pyramid does help you in making decisions.it also helps you seperate things you want to do with things you don't want to do. i think it's important because it it helps us in not overthinking decisions that could be easily made. It also helps us realize that we need to do, (even if we don't want to) what is expected of us because it not only pleases others but it helps us.

The chart

I think the chart was kinda confusing. I didn't really get the whole concept of it. But that's just me.

I really liked the pyramid we saw today in class. It REALLY made me think about things that I don't normally think about. It makes a lot of sense, its pretty much like putting yourself in a teachers mind. To grade the paper, they probably consider all three things in the pyramid. ITS PRETTY KOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! : D

I didn't see anything wrong with the chart. For some things it might help you make decisions. Sometimes, it might make me personally overthink things, but that's just me.

7th grade

I think the hardest thing that has happened for me during 7th grade is trying to get my homework all done. Sometimes it was easy and short, sometimes it was hard and long. It was also kinda hard for me lately because of Aladdin rehearsals. The 8th grade will probably be way different because it's a step up and it basically gets you ready for the challenges of high school.

Best thing versus worst thing!!

The best thing that happened to me today is that I found out my nephew, Carson, who is a freshman at Clemson, is transferring to Carolina. While I'm not a Carolina fan, I'm happy for him!

The worst thing that happened is that I didn't finish all of my work before I left school! UGH!

The best thing that happened today was that I finished all my homework at school (even Algebra!) and so I got to do whatever I wanted when I got home. Usually, I have ALOT of homework to do because of algebra! Luckily, it was easy!

The worst thing that happened today was that my brother is sick. He had to stay home which is pretty bad...but nothing really bad happened to me personally.

Good & Bad

A good thing is that we cooked pizza sticks in life skill today, which was really good, and we also tried indian food in social studies class, also that when people say that duke rocks it's only an opinion. A bad thing that happened to me today was that i found out that my dad is leaving friday night to Washington and he's taking my laptop with him!

The best thing that happend today was, I found out that the DSA game that was supposed to be on Thursday was postponed until next Thursday which is good because I'm not going to miss it anymore! :D

The best thing that happened to me today was that I got a 95 on a set design test in theater arts. A bad thing that happened to me today was that during Aladdin rehearsal, we had to do the curtian call three times to get it right.

The teacher that has inspired me the most is Mrs.McClain my 4th grade teacher, some of the kids in our class had her too.She was also my 5th grade teacher, she inspired me because she always was so sure of herself of how she taught us, most of the class got it at the first time she taught us a new lesson. Mrs. McClain knew how to control her class also, she awarded us whenever we did something good. One of the things i liked most was that she had wonderful activities, and wonderful awards like the people read the required books went to a pool party. At the end of the 4th grade year we had a tea party just for our AIG class and with our parents. She inspired me the most

An inspiring teacher

A teacher that has inspired me the most whould have to be my kindergarden teacher, Mr. Shinn. He was like a 2nd father to me. He knew about my marfan syndrome and instead of letting me go outside with everyone else, he would let me stay inside(with a buddy of course). I had alot of fun and got to play in the play stations a little longer. He made me feel like everyone else, even though I had a genetic disorder. That's why he was inspiring to me.

TEACHER

a teacher that has inspired me is my 1st and 2nd grade teacher, mrs. davis. she was so sweet and kind and i think that she is probably the most perfect teacher(other than mrs.marlowe of course =]).she was hardly ever mean and really knew what she was doing.i really miss her and hope to see her again someday. she inspired me because she was really sweet and always told me to do my best and work as hard as i can and to never give up. she is a teacher that i will never forget.

What you said Mrs. Marlowe makes sense to me, it what i was trying to say yesterday, i think i didn't do that well explaining it though. i think that we all make fun of people though we know that it's bad and hurts people's feelings, now that i think about it it makes me feel really bad. Also i agree with mrs. marlowe that we should tell people that it wrong to make fun of other people because that is another way of telling to stop. I also want to say that i'll try my best to not make fun of anyone anymore, we wouldn't like if someone did that to us, would we?

In a lot of ways I agree with you Caroline. If what you're going to say is going to hurt someone, should you say it? Right or wrong, I'm not one to hurt someones feelings on purpose...like you said, it would be hurtful to tell someone what they were wearing was not cute. BUT what if the truth you are telling is helpful to that person or someone else? Suppose your friend came and told you something that they did really mean to someone else and wanted you to agree that what they did was funny, or okay, not bad? Should you tell the truth then even though your friend might get made at you? What about when your friend tells you a joke that makes fun of other people, or countries or beliefs. If those types of jokes bother you, should you tell the truth to your friend? I think that's more what this quote is about...telling people the truth when they are acting or saying things that are unkind to other people, cultures or beliefs. One of the greatest kindnesses we can show another person/group is to defend them when no one else will...that's what I think that quote means. Does that make sense?

It's hard for me to explain what the quote means... but I don't really agree with it. Sometimes, the truth isn't the kindness thing you can give. Sometimes it could be better to lie. Like a white lie, a lie that wont harm or hurt anyone. Something, for example: Someone asks you if you like what they are wearing. You thing it looks awful, but your not going to say "I think that that is the ugliest thing in the world!" You would lie and say that you liked it (probably). That way, no feelings are hurt.

I liked the picture of the Afganistan man and the soldier because it showed me that the soldier has compassion and is caring towards the residents there. It also showed me the friendship I think they developed. It gives us here hope. I really thought that was a great picture.

The picture of the injured woman was great because it gave me hope. Even though many died, many were saved, and that really changes the peoples' lives who have been rescued. Their life from the day on out will be different and they will be a new person pretty much. That shows change......for the better. It also makes you become thankful that you are still alive if you lost a loved on because you should always cherish the time with friends, family, etc. It may be the last time you see them ever. Those were great pictures!!

Georgetty, you are right in your thinking about what heteronyms are, however, close (you are close by) is pronounced close (you hear the s sound)....close (like close the door) is pronounced cloze (you hear a z sound)...do you hear the difference now?

My favorite picture was the one of the hurt person because it gives us a connection. i liked that eight year old kid, it was kinda of sad though. i think propaganda changes people's way of thinking and how they may feel about someone of something. propaganda in that way is a negative thing to me. One reason why is because it keeps people from making their own opinions in their point of view.

Change

The change that interested me the most was when we talked about DUKE winning the tournament! But other than that, the 8-year old Russian kid discussion was pretty interesting. I don't really watch the news, so I'm not exactly "up to date" on the international issues.
And personally, I think that propaganda has a negative influence. If a country is seeing propaganda that is somewhat demeaning to another country, it could spark debates or wars--which would NOT be a good thing! Why can't we just listen to each other's viewpoints on problems and not start a fight about it? It would make the world a WAAYY better place to live in!

Benchmarks

Sorry I'm signing in late too, but anywayz i think i did pretty well on my benchmarks. I did take my time on it, so that's one of the reasons and because i do well on them usually. Mr. Morris was a good substitute it went well. Luckily no one got locked out, one time i did though, not my fault and it ended up being canceled. I think i'm having trouble understanding extended metaphors but i think i'll get it pretty soon.

I think I did pretty well on my benchmarks. I feel like I took my time and I used the methods that Mrs. Hartwell gave us.

i think that if the commissioners would have any children that went to any durham public school would make a difference because then they would know how each elective would make a difference in our education. Their point of view would be different and then even if they still had to cut, they could help us figure out which ones we don't really need. And(oops im using and 4 the beginning of a sentence) i think that if each school would do a project that could earn money, that could really help us like a car wash or another hat day, stuff like that.
